Book Review: Muscle Cars, High Performance Machines

Muscle Cars, High Performance Machines
Review rating: 2 stars
General Editor: Craig Cheetham
Copyright 2003 International Master Publishers AB
ISBN 13 Digit 978-0-7607-4190-0
ISBN 10 Digit 0-7607-4190-5

This a large book 8.5″ wide about 11″ high and 0.875 in thick
It has 11 brands of cars with about 51 different cars. Not all of which I would classify as muscle cars.
Each brand is totally unorganized as to year or type or model or anything. If you want to know something you literally have page through the whole book.
There is no special or good information.
The book would be good to give to someone who is just starting to get interested in muscle cars. For a knowledgeable person, NO! I got it on reduced price rack.
Not recommended for purchase.

History of cars other than Big Three

A history of cars outside the Big Three.
1950 Hudson Pacemaker had 232 cid six with 112 bhp.
1950 Hudson Commodore had 262 cid Super Six with 123 bhp.
1950 Packard Custom Eight had 356 cid 160 bhp.
1951 Kaiser had 226 cid 112 Thunderhead six.
1951 Hudson Hornet introduces largest six. A 308 cid 145 bhp engine and ruled NASCAR racing.
1951 Studebaker gets its first 232.6 cid 120 bhp overhead vale V8 in a low priced car.
1952 Hudson Hornet got 308 cid 170 bhp dual carb Twin-H power engine. The carbs had bright red air cleaners. It ruled NASCAR until 1954.
1953 Hudson offered the 7x race engine for “severe usage” making 210 bhp.

Review by HubcapGT Webmaster
This a small easy to carry around book . 4.25 wide x 4.25 high x .75 thick.
It has 187 pictures of great muscle cars with tables of information.
The opening introduction is a great synopsis of the muscle car era.
Page 19 has the definitions for the terms and acronyms used in the charts for each car.
Each car has a very good article on that model and its power options.
Some of the type is small and thin for those with poor eyes, but I managed.
The amount of information is large considering the size of the book.
A lot of the sales figures and some of the other information appear in posts on this blog.
I did not find any errors on cars as far as my memory of the era goes. This was my era of real cars.
This is a book I recommend for purchase.

General Motors history of muscle cars.

In 1939 Buick had a Roadmaster and a Limited with a 302 cid engine with 141 bhp. They put that iengine in their Special and called it the Century because it could go 100 miles per hour. That is the real definition of a muscle car. Put a big car engine in a small car and give a new name. The birth of the muscle car idea.
